On Friday 1st March, Wigan & Leigh College was a proud host to our first Career Quest in Artificial Intelligence. This event marked a significant milestone for the college, heralding the launch of their new GMIoT HND Digital Technology and AI Intelligence Solutions and Applications course set to commence in September 2024. It was a day dedicated to exploring how AI and digital technologies have a positive impact on industry and inspiring the next generation of tech innovators.

The event commenced with a warm welcome from GMIoT Director, Claire Foreman. Addressing a diverse audience comprising Greater Manchester employers, students from local Wigan borough high schools, level 3 computing students, and GMIoT Wigan & Leigh Computing students and Apprentices.
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Rob Heath, Sales Manager for Microsoft Azure, who provided valuable insights into careers at Microsoft and the pivotal role of AI in shaping future industries. Following Rob’s engaging presentation, a series of lightning talks captivated the audience. Colin Stirling, Enterprise Architect at IBM, shed light on the transformative power of GEN AI in industry, while Dominique De Silva from the University of Salford shared wisdom on navigating non-linear career paths in technology and IT. Deborah Millar of Hull College delved into the realm of digital transformation and AI in education, offering perspectives on the future of learning and digital transformation.

The presentations closed with the official launch of the new HND Digital Technology and AI Intelligence Solutions and Applications course. Paul Molyneux, Higher Education Computing Course Leader, and David Charlton, a former Wigan & Leigh alumni now with SONY, unveiled this ground-breaking course, promising to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age.

Guests were then invited to explore the immersive CAVE, a marketplace where students and guest speakers networked, offering valuable insights and engaging in one-on-one Q&A sessions with eager learners. Attendees were treated to a technology showcase, including a 3D laser printer in action and immersive virtual reality experiences curated by Andy Miah, Professor at the University of Salford, providing a glimpse into the future of AI and immersive technologies.

As the day drew to a close, the Wigan & Leigh Outreach teams talked about student finance options and the myriad benefits of higher education. With minds buzzing with inspiration and excitement, participants departed, eager to embark on their journey into the dynamic world of AI and digital technology.
