GCHQ Workplace Safari Event

GCHQ

Location: GCHQ

Students Across Greater Manchester Explore Cyber Careers at GCHQ

Students from across the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology partnership took part in an immersive Workplace Safari at the Government Communications Headquarters in Manchester on 18 February 2026, hosted with local industry partners.

The event welcomed students for a day designed to introduce them to the world of cyber security, digital technology, and the organisations helping to protect the UK’s digital infrastructure.

The day began with an introduction to the programme and an overview of the organisations involved. Students took part in “Demystifying GCHQ – what do we do, roles in the area, routes into industry.” This session gave students a clearer understanding of the organisation’s mission, the types of careers available in cyber and intelligence, and the different routes into the sector.

Members of GCHQ and their partners delivered a series of short talks, offering students first-hand insight into their work. Topics included an introduction to GCHQ’s role within the UK intelligence community, and a “day in the life” perspective from employees working in the organisation. Students also learned about the Developed Vetting (DV) process, gaining a better understanding of the security clearances required for careers within national security organisations.

Following the morning sessions, students heard from an industry spotlight presentation from QinetiQ, delivered by Ben Tucker. The session highlighted the types of complex challenges organisations in the cyber and defence sectors tackle every day.

After lunch, the event shifted into a series of interactive activities designed to encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. Students participated in a collaborative Lego challenge, and explored practical guidance around staying safe online.

The Workplace Safari is part of a wider programme of employer engagement activities, helping students connect their learning with real industry environments.

GMIoT would like to thank GCHQ, and their industry partners including QinetiQ for supporting the event and providing students with an inspiring introduction to careers in cyber security and advanced technology.
